At Praxis you will enjoy serene country living with panoramic views of the surrounding prairie and lake. Rolling countryside with lots of trees and a beautiful sunrise will greet you every morning and a colourful sunset will be there at night. On a clear night in the winter you might see the beautiful Northern Lights across a sky laden with stars.
Students enjoy comfort, convenience and security while living and learning at Praxis.
The Praxis facility is located in Saskatchewan in the Eco village across the highway from Craik, a town that is about midway between the two main cities of Saskatoon and Regina, both of which have universities and colleges. Completed in 2008, it is 7,000 square feet of space on two levels, designed and built in an environmentally friendly way with high ceilings, large windows, tile & hardwood flooring and a huge fireplace for the winter. Heated by a pellet furnace from Denmark, it uses renewable resources as fuel. Bright bathrooms with composting toilet and shower facilities provide the comforts of modern living. Surrounding the building is a 2,000 square foot deck where learners can sit in the summer and work on their projects, or watch the setting sun and look out over the golf course.
We have a maximum of four people per large bedroom with excellent light and fabulous windows.
There are several indoor games, a recreational area and a library with lots of variety to choose from.
Outside we have a fire pit, outdoor humanure built by a summer camp and a solar shower building crafted during a workshop.
You have access to regular medical services from the Saskatchewan government - the birthplace of universal healthcare. We have both male and female staff to talk to in confidence about any health concerns.
We have plenty of access to natural and planned activities inside and outside to ensure a healthy blend of physical and mental exercise. Fitness equipment, ping pong, billiards and curling are regular activities year round. We have a well stocked library and a myriad of board games that keep the mind active and the laughter going.
Each person is treated as "family" from the moment we meet them. Upon arrival they are shown to their rooms and introduced to staff and roommates so everyone feels comfortable and at home.
We have a safe for personal items of value, access to local medical and police support within a few short minutes, and are equipped with First Aid kit and staff trained in First Aid.
Being located in the country also increases security due to low population density.
We have a large and bright kitchen with a trained chef who prepares healthy, nutritious food. Food is as local, fresh and organic as possible with a variety of fare. Menus for special dietary requirements can be designed upon request. Learners are provided with a small fridge to store their own snacks or drinks.
We also have special nights of ethnically diverse food in order to grow our "global" appreciation. Meals may be prepared by the youth under the supervision of the chef in order to grow their culinary skills and build community.
High speed internet is available for conducting research or completing projects.
Planned excursions to nearby cities and historical sites provide opportunities to learn about Western Canada. Extra curricular activities may include dance, music, softball, golf, skating, cycling, cross country skiing, archery, camping, fishing, photography as well as organized excursion events depending upon the season.
